Grand Opening! Total Investment of 120 Million Yuan, the Largest Infrastructure Project in Human History Is Coming! Will Drive Growth Across Multiple Industries
Opening ceremony for the Jinping River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project was held on August 19th, morning, in Lijiang City, Xizang Autonomous Region. Standing members of the Central Political Bureau and State Council Chairman Li Qiang attended the ceremony and announced the official start of construction. The Jinping River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project is located in Lijiang City, Xizang Autonomous Region. The project adopts a cascade development approach with diversion and reservoir water intake, constructing five hydropower stations with a total investment of approximately 12 billion yuan. The generated electricity will primarily be transmitted to other regions while also meeting local demand in Xizang. This project will drive growth across multiple industries.
As a super-large hydropower project with a total investment of around 12 billion yuan, the planned installed capacity exceeds 70 million kilowatts, with an estimated annual power generation reaching 30 billion kilowatt-hours—comparable to building the Three Gorges Dam again. The construction of this project will bring profound and far-reaching impacts not only to China but also to the entire world.
The Three Gorges Project, as one of the most influential mega-hydropower projects globally, has a total installed capacity of 22.5 million kilowatts and an annual power output exceeding 100 billion kilowatt-hours, with cumulative investment reaching 207.2 billion yuan. Its massive scale and global influence have been widely recognized. The Jinping River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project surpasses even the Three Gorges Project in terms of future planning, demonstrating a more ambitious vision. In comparison, its installed capacity is over three times that of the Three Gorges Project, annual power generation is also tripled, and investment scale exceeds six times that of the Three Gorges Project. From these direct figures, it's clear that this project carries immense strength and significance.
With China’s economy continuing to grow rapidly, energy demand keeps rising. Upon completion, the Jinping River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project will generate up to 30 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, significantly increasing the share of clean energy in China’s energy mix. This will effectively reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels such as coal and oil, supporting China’s leadership in the global energy transition and providing strong support for achieving national carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals.
The official launch of the Jinping River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project is another major practical demonstration of China’s strength and responsibility on the world stage. It bears the critical mission of national energy transformation, shoulders the significant responsibility of promoting economic development, and embodies a deep political commitment to national security and sustainable development.

It ensures the smooth construction and operation of the Jinping River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project and safeguards key national interests.
According to the National Energy Administration report, the water energy resources in Xizang Autonomous Region amount to about 200 million kilowatts, accounting for nearly 30% of the country’s total—ranking first nationwide. Most of these resources are concentrated in the Jinsha River and the 'Three Rivers' region (Lancang River, Nujiang River, and Jinsha River) in southeastern Xizang. The technical potential of the Jinsha River alone reaches 56.45 million kilowatts, representing 51% of the region’s total and 10% of the nation’s total. The lower reaches of the river feature large elevation drops and abundant exploitable hydropower capacity—estimated at 38 million kilowatts—earning it the title of 'the world’s greatest concentration of hydropower resources.'
Eastern Financial Research Report specifically pointed out that with the official start of the Jinping River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project, demand across numerous specialized industries will see definitive growth, with long-term prospects for sustained strengthening. Looking ahead, the project’s ripple effects are enormous, encompassing investment and engineering design, dam equipment, cement, steel, construction materials (such as concrete additives), machinery, soil, and more.
Tianfeng Securities analysis notes that the infrastructure investment scale of the Jinping River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project is exceptionally large, covering energy infrastructure investment, general contracting enterprises, site management, soil companies, water diversion and reservoir equipment, engineering machinery firms, cement producers, and construction material suppliers like cement and water reducers. These sectors are expected to become core beneficiaries, with their long-term growth potential significantly enhanced.
