In the waterproofing industry, there's a saying: 'Three parts material, seven parts workmanship'—highlighting the critical role of proper installation. However, in real construction, some waterproofing technicians overlook crucial details, leading to hidden leaks and long-term damage. Mastering these 10 key points will help ensure your waterproofing job is nearly flawless.

1. Apply primer to the base layer before starting membrane application

A highly absorbent base layer can draw moisture from the waterproofing membrane material, causing uneven drying, weak spots, bubbling, and poor adhesion. It’s recommended to thoroughly dry and prime the surface; in some cases, even a sealing coat may be necessary.

2. Do not perform water test before the membrane has fully cured

Performing only one water test after applying the membrane is risky—if the membrane hasn’t fully cured, it’s still chemically active. Pouring clean water over it during testing can damage the uncured layer, leading to blistering, peeling, or cracking. Proper procedure: first apply a protective layer on the surface, then wait until all fixtures are installed or the structure is fully completed before conducting a second water test. This ensures no secondary damage occurs during the process.

3. Three coats are sufficient—no need for excessive thickness

Applying too many coats isn’t required. There’s no requirement for a specific number of layers, but the direction and consistency of each coat matter more. The key is proper thickness—each coat must be applied evenly. Even if the water test passes, an overly thick coating may still fail due to incomplete curing. Standards require a minimum thickness of 1.5 mm; however, most on-site applications fall short. Over-thickening causes surface drying while internal material remains uncured, leading to blistering, cracking, or delamination—especially at corners where material buildup is common. Always apply coat by coat, allowing each layer to dry completely before the next. Rushing by spreading the material randomly leads to inconsistent drying, with some areas hard and others soft—effectively making the waterproofing effort pointless.

4. Never apply membrane directly on the rough substrate

Applying membrane directly on a rough or uneven substrate creates hidden risks. The ridges and irregularities on the surface act as weak points—even if coated, they remain vulnerable. Many contractors skip leveling or smoothing the original substrate before applying the membrane. If the surface has cracks or gaps, simply painting over them won’t fix the issue—the area becomes a small leak point. Before applying any membrane, properly level and smooth the substrate. Fill any voids or holes first, and avoid sharp edges.

5. Don’t apply membrane directly without preparing the base layer

If the base layer has voids, cracks, or unevenness, repair and prepare it thoroughly before applying the membrane. Once fully dried and stabilized, proceed with the coating. Otherwise, the membrane’s quality and durability will be compromised.

6. Avoid applying membrane when the base layer is wet

Wet base layers cause rapid evaporation of the membrane’s liquid components, disrupting the mix ratio and leading to uneven texture, white streaks, or poor performance.

7. Never add other materials to the waterproofing membrane

The membrane’s formula is carefully tested and balanced. Adding water or other substances alters the chemical composition, compromises quality, and reduces waterproofing effectiveness.

8. Do not install new plumbing or drainage pipes beneath the membrane

Install new piping systems above the membrane layer whenever possible. This prevents leaks from affecting adjacent units and avoids damaging the membrane during future repairs.

9. Use rounded corners at joints, pipe openings, and inside corners

Sharp angles create stress concentration points, weakening the waterproofing layer and increasing the risk of failure. Corners and pipe junctions are high-risk areas—failing to round them creates concentrated stress zones that lead to cracks and leaks.

10. Never skip the protective layer

Post-installation work or later trades can easily damage the membrane surface. Without a protective layer, the membrane may be punctured or scratched, rendering it ineffective. Long-term exposure to UV rays also degrades the membrane’s lifespan.
